On May 1, John Thomas presented the Science of Sound to Veteran's Park second graders.

The RSO is developing more programs that will augment music classes in area schools. Principal trumpeter John Thomas visited all second grades in the six Ridgefield Public Schools (over 300 children) last month to present “The Science of Sound.”

He demonstrated vibration, pitch, dynamics and timbre using the trumpet, French horn (see photo) and trombone. Thomas also delighted students and teachers alike with the more unusual bugle and the Australian didjeridu. He then swung a self-constructed “hose-a-phone” over his head in lasso fashion while buzzing Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” through the mouthpiece — a hilarious finale for his entranced audience.
The program was designed to complement part of the second grade science curriculum focus on the properties of sound. The RSO looks forward to presenting more programs that connect to classroom curricula in addition to developing student interest in the musical arts.

The RSO also wants to reach persons who may not be able to attend our regular season concerts. Two Sunday afternoon trumpet and piano programs were held on February 2, 2008 in Meadow Ridge and Ridgefield Crossings. Both programs were attended by enthusiastic audiences of 50–80 residents and staff.

Next season we are planning to present mini concert series in three facilities, which will feature string quartets, wind trio and soloists.
